6 Key Steps When Moving From Out of State

Relocating from one state to another can be exhilarating, stressful, and everything in between. Whether you’re moving from out of state for a job, family, or a fresh start, planning ahead makes all the difference. In this post, I’ll walk you through the essential steps for a successful out-of-state move—drawing on my own experience helping clients relocate. If you’re wondering “how do I move from out of state and make it smooth?”, you’re in the right place.

Why moving out from of state is different

Moving within the same city or state already takes coordination—but when you cross state lines, there are extra layers:

  • Working out areas that will work for you from afar
  • Adjusting to pricing and cost of living
  • Choosing the right professional to help you
  • Finding housing without being on-site
  • Adjusting to new community norms, utilities, and services

These factors mean you’ll need extra time, resources, and planning.

6 Key Steps for an Out-of-State Move

Here are the most important steps you should plan for:

1. Make a Discovery Trip

Discovery Trips if you can make it work will help so much. Use this trip to check out the new area you are moving too. Drive through cities, towns, check out neighborhoods, parks, schools and commute times. Be sure to note down neighborhoods and areas you love. This will make it easier when it comes to choosing where you want to move.

2. Narrow Down 3 Areas

It is now time to make life easier for yourself. Narrow down 3 areas from your discovery trip. This area should be within good commute limitations if you have a office location you need to travel too. Also think about distance to those things you need to visit regularly. Think about neighborhoods you saw within those areas that you would enjoy living in. Research house prices in these areas to make sure they fit within your budget.
This will help you choose a city that fits your lifestyle.

3. Hire a reputable realtor that works in the areas you are looking in!

Here in Longmont, Denver and surrounding areas, certain cities and towns can be far away from one another. Be sure to choose a experienced realtor that has experience in the neighborhoods and areas you are looking in. Remember, you may need to trust this realtor to tour houses without you. If you can’t get back every time for showings make sure your realtor is comfortable and good at virtual tours. This will include photos, videos and notes on each home as well as notes on the neighborhood and area.

4. Purge and Sort

Out-of-state moves are a great opportunity to declutter. Fewer items = lower moving costs. There is no use moving a bunch of stuff you never use, that will just cost you money. Purge, sort and be sure to label boxes well as this will help you unpack with less stress.

5. Attend What You Can

If you can’t make it to the showings and you trust your realtor’s virtual info maybe, you can make it into town for inspection. This will give you a chance to see the home. I have sold homes sight unseen, and I can say my clients loved the homes, but it is nerve wracking for everyone. If you can’t make it for inspection, try and be here for closing. That way you can see the home and be handed the keys on the day you close.

6. Settle In

Unpack, get comfortable in your home then get out and settle in to your new area. As a expat I can tell you that settling in and finding “your spots” can help with the homesickness. Finding a park, coffee shop, bookstore, brewery you can call home and become known in helps you feel more at home. Make time to get out and get to know your new area.
